Annual Camps

Every year cadets from various squadrons are given the chance to attend a camp on an operational RAF station. Usually these camps last 1 week and give the cadets a chance to see what life is like on a working RAF station, as well as meeting cadets from various other squadrons.

While attending a camp, you will sleep in RAF accommodation, eat in the mess and visit various sections of the station at which you are based. However, there are also many other things to do, such as quizzes, sport and various social activities.

As you are on an active base, there will be regular drill, uniform and room inspections, much as serving personnel have. These inspections allow you to gain points for yourself and your flight. While on camp, most cadets will get at least one Air Experience Flight, usually in a Tutor, based at the station. However, being based at an RAF station also gives cadets the opportunity to take part in opportunity flights on any aircraft at the station which may have a few spare seats. For cadets over 16, there is also the chance to receive a Work Placement where you can experience first hand what a job in the RAF involves.

Over Seas Camps

Cadets over 15 and who have already attended a UK camp are then eligible to attend an overseas camp. However, spaces are limited, so a place can not always be guaranteed. Current overseas camps run in Gibraltar and at Akrotiri in Cyprus.

An overseas camp is not like a UK camp. The atmosphere is often more relaxed and concentrate less on drill and discipline and more on work experience, as well as seeing the local area.

International Air Cadet Exchange

The International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) links air minded youth organisations across the world on a 15-day exchange visit each July and August.

The first such exchange was in 1947 between the ATC(UK) and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The Association is now 19 nations, exchanging some 600 cadets/adults annually with English as the common language. The UK exchanges 90 cadets annually (we do get them back at the end) with 14 different countries. Each year, UK cadets aged between 17 and 19 may apply for a position on this scheme and may be fortunate enough to be awarded one of the few places each year.
