Going for Gold.
2009-05-31
Cadets and Staff from Goole Air Cadets recently took part in the South and West Yorkshire Wing Inter Squadron Athletics competition in Sheffield. The competition is open to all squadrons within the South and West Yorkshire Wing, resulting in up to 39 competitors per race and category making the competition especially difficult.
The threat of rain (and the eventual down pours) didn’t put off the Goole cadets, with several cadets getting into the finals for their events. By the end of the day, Cadet Jordan Whitlam (14) came away with a Gold for Shot and Cadet Corporal Matthew Hillam (17) attained Silver for 400m. Cadet Whitlam has since been asked to represent the Wing in the North Region Athletics Competition, where he will represent South and West Yorkshire against the other 5 Wings in the north of England. Overall the Squadron was placed 20th.
While the Cadets were busy putting their all into their events, the Staff were busy track side acting as official race timers. Sergeant (ATC) V Docherty said “We tend to ask so much of the Cadets, it seems only fair the staff play their part as well”.
Athletics is just one of the sporting activities the Air Training Corps. offers. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such events.
