First Flights for Askern Cadets
2009-09-09
Askern Air Cadets recently got their first taste of flight. 4 cadets travelled to RAF Syerston to undertake their Glider Induction Training. This gave the cadets their first flights in a Glider. Two weeks later, more Askern Air cadets attended RAF Church Fenton, where they got their first taste of powered flight in the Tutor aircraft.

The cadets initially had a safety brief and listened to the weather report for the day. This was then followed up by an introduction to the Viking gliders and finally their first flights. The cadets are encouraged to take control of the aircraft as well as learning to apply what they have learnt in the classroom to the flight. While not gliding, the cadets were encouraged to help with attaching the cables to the gliders and moving them ready for launch. The cadets were also lucky enough to be offered additional flights in the Vigilant motor gliders giving them an extra flight each. Civilian Instructor G Paterson was also lucky enough to get a flight, a reward for taking the cadets to the event.

The cadets who later attended RAF Church Fenton were each given a 30 minute flight in the Tutor aircraft, flown by an experienced pilot. During their flight they were encouraged to take control of the aircraft, experience aerobatics and put into practice what they have learnt about how an aircraft works, navigation and other aviation related subjects. The majority of the cadets also got to fly over their homes, making the flight more memorable. Cadet Stevens (16) said after his flight in the Tutor “It was great, I really enjoyed it.”.
Askern Squadron is one of many Squadrons around the country which are part of the Air Training Corps. a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17, or over 20 for staff. The Squadron tries to ensure that all cadets get at least one flight per year, as well as giving the cadets a solid grounding in aviation related subjects.
