Air Cadets from all over South and West Yorkshire recently took part in the Inter-Wing Junior Football and Hockey competitions. The competitions are open to all Air Cadet Wings within the North of England, with the individual Wings selecting their best players to represent them.
The Wing’s Football team was down to only 12 men before the matches started. Cadets had attended selection trials earlier in the month, but due to other commitments and illness not all selected were able to attend. The team were determined to win despite being down on numbers, but after several hard fought matches the Wing were placed 3rd overall.
The Wing’s Hockey team again were down on numbers, but not to the same extent as the Football team. The team were determined to win but suffered an early set back and a number of injuries. However due to a strong come back in their final game the Wing were placed 3rd overall, a great disappointment to all those who took part and not reflected by the effort the team had put in, in their last match.
Overall the 2 teams were each placed 3rd in their respective competitions. A number of players from each team, have been asked back to attend trials for the Region teams. If selected, the cadets will represent the North of England against the rest of the UK in the inter Region matches.
Officer Cadet Victoria Docherty (Wing Hockey Team manager) said, “It’s great to see the cadets do well in these sporting events and getting to represent the Wing. I hope those selected do well in the Region trials.”
This sentiment was also reflected by Civilian Instructor M Elder (Acting Wing Football Team manager) “It was good to see the cadet do well, despite the low turnout. Hopefully we will do better next time round”.
Football and Hockey are just some of the sporting activities the Air Training Corps offers. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such events.
