Goole Air Cadets Go for It
2009-12-10

A lucky few Goole Air Cadets were recently selected to represent North Region, in the Inter Region Air Cadet Junior Football and Hockey competitions. The competitions are open to all Air Cadet Regions and bring together the best players from across the country.

Cadet M Graves was selected for the Region Football team, after first being selected for the Wing team. Cadet R James was also selected for the Region Hockey team, again after first getting a place on the Wing team. Both had to travel to RAF Cosford of the competitions, which are held every year. This is the first time that Goole has had Cadets participate at this level, for these events for some years.

Air Cadets from Goole took part in the Inter-Region Senior Rugby as well. The competition is open to all Air Cadet Regions in the country and brings together the best players the Regions have. Cadet Flight Sergeant M Grayson (17) made up the Goole contingent of the Region team, with and Cadet Moles (16) selected as a reserve. The cadets travelled to RAF Cosford to play their matches, against the best the rest of the country had to offer. Despite a lot of hard work, the North Region team did not do as well as hoped and did not win the competition.
Cadet Flight Sergeant Grayson said “It was a good day, it was a shame not to win, but we have learnt for next year and know what we need to work on”.

Goole Air Cadets recently went out bag packing at the Sainsburys store in Selby. Despite only 4 cadets being able to attend the event they managed to raise over £420 in just 6 hours. The money will be put towards getting the Squadron a new sports kit, as the current one is now showing its age.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Olivia Little (aged 18), said “I like activities like this, everyone is always smiling and the public are always happy to talk to us. It was a shame more cadets couldn’t attend, but the amount we raised was still amazing”.

Goole and Askern Air Cadets came together to raise money for the each of their Squadrons. The cadets were out bag packing at the Tesco store in Market Weighton. 6 cadets attended the day at the store and managed to raise just under £600.00.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Matthew Hillam (aged 18), from Goole Air Cadets said “Cadet activities like this are really great for the cadets. It always surprises me the number of people who were in the RAF or know someone who is and are willing to talk to you”.

And finally 4 Goole Air Cadets recently got their first taste of flight recently. The Cadets attended RAF Church Fenton’s 9 Air Experience Flight. The Flight provides Air Cadets a taste of flight in a powered aircraft and later trains them to go solo.

The cadets were each given a 25 minute flight in the Tutor aircraft, flown by an experienced pilot.  This was the first time 4 of them had taken to the air. During their flight they were encouraged to take control of the aircraft, experience aerobatics and put into practice what they have learnt about how an aircraft works, navigation and other aviation related subjects. The majority of the cadets also got to fly over their homes, making the flight more memorable.
After the cadets had flown the staff, who had taken them, also got the opportunity to of a flight. CI Wallen said “For some of the cadets this is their first ever flight and one they will never forget”.
Goole Squadron is one of many Squadrons around the country which are part of the Air Training Corps. a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17, or over 20 for staff. The Squadron tries to ensure that all cadets get at least one flight per year, as well as giving the cadets a solid grounding in aviation related subjects. If you are interested in finding out more about Goole Air Cadets visit us at www.gooleaircadets.co.uk, or visit the TA Centre, Pasture Road, Goole on a Wednesday or Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
