Air Cadets Soaring to Suceed
2010-03-21
Three Askern Air Cadets recently got the opportunity to attend RAF Syerston to go gliding. The station houses 643 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, who teach cadets about gliding and train them up to go solo and beyond. For Cadets Georgina Gregory (13) and Rebecca Wardle (13) this was their first flight. For Cadet Alice Woodrow (15), it was a chance to build upon earlier experiences and take control herself.
The cadets had a busy day of it, setting off early in the morning to get down the station ready for the day to begin. They were briefed on the program for the day and given the safety brief. After that the cadets were taken onto the air field. Each cadet had a number of flights in a Grob Viking glider. When not flying, the cadets assisted in manoeuvring air craft and getting them ready for launch.
Pilot Officer Vicky Docherty, 2nd in command at Askern, said “It’s great to take the cadets to events like this. While we can teach them the principles behind flight, this makes it more real for them”.
Askern Squadron is one of many Squadrons around the country which are part of the Air Training Corps. a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17, or over 20 for staff. The Squadron tries to ensure that all cadets get at least one flight per year, as well as giving the cadets a solid grounding in aviation related subjects.
