Athletic Success for Askern Air Cadets.

Askern Air Cadets recently came home with a clutch of medals from the South and West Yorkshire Wing Athletics competition.  The cadets came 14th overall, with a strong performance in the 2 female age categories.

The event, held at Woodburn Road athletics Stadium in Sheffield, attracts competitors from all the Squadrons in South and West Yorkshire Wing, leading to stiff competition in all events.  Askern achieved a Silver and 4 Bronze medals in both track and field events, as well as a number of finishers in the top 6, in the various activities.

Cadet Sergeant Colwill achieved a Silver in Shot Put and and Bronze in Discus.  Cadet Wagstaff achieved a Bronze in 200m and Cadet Corporal Taylor and Cadet Wardle achieved further Bronze medal positions in Javelin and Shot Put respectively.  Overall these medals and the other top 6 places placed the Squadron 14th overall, but also placed the Squadron 7th and 8th in the 2 female age groups.

The Askern staff also got involved in the event, with a large number of them assisting in the running of the various activities.  They had also planned to take part in the staff relay race, but this was cancelled due to bad weather (Possibly to the relief of the staff, but disappointment of the cadets).

Flight Lieutenant Docherty, Officer Commanding Askern, said “It was great to have so many cadets attend the event.  We almost had the full squadron turn out.  The effort the cadets put in was reflected in their medal tally.”  He went on to say “The contribution the staff also made to the event cannot be ignored.  Much like the cadets, they were all willing to get involved and help where they could”.
