Out and About with the Air Cadets.
2010-05-17
Recently Air Cadets from Askern and Goole came together to complete their actual and practice expeditions for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. The expedition required the cadets to plan and walk 20 miles over 2 days, while camping overnight.

15 cadets from the 2 squadrons came together to plan the expedition, around the Selby area, discuss the equipment they would require, who would be sharing tents etc, before meeting up again on the day of the expedition. Sunny weather greeted them as they set off on their expedition, with maps and sun cream in hand. The first days walking went well, with just one or two minor detours from the groups. Spirits were high by the time the cadets reached the campsite and everyone was looking forward to the following day. A spontaneous game of football against some local Scouts, that night, added to the fun. The following day the cadets were greeted once again with sunny weather. They soon set off to complete their expedition, while the weather held for them. The second day saw a few cadets retire from the expedition, but the remaining cadets carried on to the end, where some of them were rewarded with an ice cream, due to a convenient passing ice cream van. For many it was a great achievement and one they were proud of.
Pilot Officer Vicky Docherty, who assessed the cadets for the venture, said “It’s expeditions like this that you look forward to. Nice weather, cadets in high spirits and achieving something for themselves that they didn’t think was possible only a day earlier”.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is just one of the many opportunities the Air Training Corps. offers to its members, both cadets and staff. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such events.
