Askern Air Cadets recently entered the South and West Yorkshire Wing drill competition, held at RAF Church Fenton. The competition sees Air Cadet units from all over South and West Yorkshire come together to participate. The Askern team contained a lot of new cadets, some who have only been with the Squadron a few weeks. Despite this and a reduced team, the cadets went to give it their all.

The staff watched on nervously as the cadets went through the sequence, but by the end could barely contain their delight at how well the Squad performed. A number of Senior Officers and officials commented afterwards at how well the cadets had done, for such a young squad. After the competition and the judges had has time to work out the final scores, Askern were placed 19th overall, beating a number of Squadrons including some local rivals. This achievement was only surpassed by the Drill Co-ordinator, Cadet Brendon Wagstaff who commanded the Squad, who was placed 6th in the Wing, a great achievement for such a young cadet.
Pilot Officer Victoria Docherty, who trained the cadets, said “It is great to see them do so well. They put a lot of effort and time in and achieved something they can be proud of.” She later added “Cadet Wagstaff did himself proud. A number of the judges commented how well he did on the day and the results reflect this”.
Foot Drill and competitions are just some of the many opportunities the Air Training Corps. offers to its members, both cadets and staff. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such events.
