Local Cadets get a Buzz
2010-06-10

Local Askern Air Cadets got a surprise recently, when they were asked to step outside their building, as someone wanted to pay them a visit.  Much bemused, the cadets stood outside, looking for their visitor.  A few moments later, the South Yorkshire Police helicopter flew over.

The aircraft performed a number of low level sweeps over the cadets, before hovering in the playing field opposite the Squadron.  This gave the cadets a chance to see the Helicopter up close and see what it is capable to doing.  The aircraft then returned, back to normal duty, waved off by the cadets.

The visit was arranged by Civilian Instructor Michael Caunter, a member of staff at the Squadron.  While chasing up former members of the Squadron, he found one of the former Commanding Officers was involved with the South Yorkshire Police Helicopter, SY99.  A few exchanged messages later and the helicopter was able to pass by the Squadron, while out on routine patrol.

CI Caunter said “It was nice to see a former staff member give something back to the Squadron, in addition to all the time they originally gave up”.  He continues “The cadets didn’t know what to expect, but really enjoyed the surprise.  As did a few local residents, who were passing by at the time”.

Askern Squadron is one of many Squadrons around the country which are part of the Air Training Corps. a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17, or over 20 for staff.  If you are interested in finding out more about Askern Air Cadets visit us as www.askernatc.com  or visit the Cadet Hut, Askern Spa School, Askern on a Tuesday or Friday night.
