Out in the Open Wolds
2010-06-17

The recent bank holiday provided Askern Air Cadets with the perfect opportunity to get out into the countryside, to complete a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Silver level expeditions in the Yorkshire Wolds. 3 cadets from Askern, one from Crowle and a fifth from Batley made up the team, who undertook the expedition.  The expedition saw the cadets undertake a 3 day venture, camping each night and carrying everything they needed for the event with them.  The cadets walked around 11 miles each day, exploring the Yorkshire Wolds, and camped overnight, cooking for themselves for the entire expedition.

The expedition was part of the cadets Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which sees cadets undertake self sufficient expeditions, volunteer in the local community, undertake a program of physical achievement and learn and develop new skill, as part of a team.

Flight Lieutenant Docherty, officer commanding Askern Squadron and who helped supervise the cadets aid “The cadets had a real good time.  The weather was a little doubtful at the beginning, but improved as the weekend went on.  They all did well and found out how much they can achieve when they put their minds to it.”

Askern Squadron is one of many Squadrons around the country which are part of the Air Training Corps. a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17, or over 20 for staff.  The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is just one of the many activities we offer cadets.  If you are interested in finding out more about Askern Air Cadets visit us as www.askernatc.com  or visit the Cadet Hut, Askern Spa School, Askern on a Tuesday or Friday night.
